Issue:
The steep bank from the lawn to the street was diffictult to maintain,
and eroded with heavy rains.
Remedy:
The owner requested a retaining wall that was different from the
standard options. The natural stone and timber wall has a drainage
system behind it. The grade behind the wall was cut back at 22
degrees and “benched” to relieve weight of the soil
pressure and gravel backfill. The drain gravel was concealed with
2-4 inch creek cobbles behind the galvanized welded wire fabric.
A few trees were saved by using less timbers, and the spaces allow
the wall to drain freely. This wall has been monitored for 14 years,
and there has been no movement in any of the wall sections.
